COLUMBIA, S.C. — Four members of the South Carolina women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday in Columbia, S.C. Two Gamecock doubles teams reached the finals of their respective flights as well.
In flight A-1, Gira Schofield first defeated Kelsey Linville from Davison 7-5, 6-0 and then Anna Novo of USC-Upstate 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Ana Marija Zubori posted a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Laura Bolesky from Coastal Carolina in her first match before disposing of Charleston Southern’s Andrea Schuttes 6-1, 6-1.
Natasa Vuckovic scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory in her first match versus Jessica Cook from East Carolina in flight A-2 and then upended Amy Pazahanick of Charleston Southern 6-4, 6-3. In the same draw, Suzanna Mansour was a 6-4, 6-2 winner against Davidson’s Virginia Berry but suffered a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 setback to Alida Muller-Wehler of Armstrong Atlantic in the quarters.
Miljana Jocic breezed through her two matches in the B-2 flight. She first defeated Sophie Ahlberg of Coastal Carolina 6-0, 6-2 and then blanked Belisa de Brito from UT-Martin 6-0, 6-0.
Megan McGavock recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win in her first match of the day against Francis Marion’s Sarka Vitkova and then lost 6-4, 6-4 to Tera Byrne of East Tennessee State in the quarterfinals.
Prior to singles play, Schofield and Zubori advanced to the A-1 doubles flight championship thanks to an 8-5 win over Stupak/Volobuena from East Tennessee State. McGavock and Jocic reached the final of the B-1 flight after beating Gennaoui/Cordell from Erskine 8-4. Mansour and Vuckovic lost 8-1 to Dwose/McMillian from College of Charleston.
The Southern Intercollegiate Championships conclude Sunday with doubles matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. Three sites are being utilized for the tournament including Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center, Sam Daniel Tennis Center, and Columbia Tennis Center. Admission to the event is free.
