COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s and women’s track teams will travel to Gainesville, Fla. Saturday to participate in the 2008 Tom Jones Memorial Classic held at the O’Connell Center.
Competing teams will include SEC schools Auburn, Georgia and host Florida along with the Clemson women’s team, Florida State and Miami. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the first running event scheduled for 2 p.m.
WHO TO WATCH ON THE WOMEN’S SIDE
The sixth-ranked women’s team is coming off a strong showing in its season opener at the UNC Classic last week and will compete in 14 events. Lakya Brookins, the SEC Freshman of the Week, will once again race in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Other winners from last weekend competing are Gabrielle Glenn (55m, 200m), Brandi Cross (400m), Sallie Gurganus (pole vault), Brittney James (long jump, 55mH) and the 4x400m relay team (Faraign Giles, Porche Byrd, Sade St. Louis, Brandi Cross). Rebecca Chain, Callie Rabun and Lisa McKinney hope to pace Carolina in the distance events and Aimee Kodat will represent the Gamecocks in throws.
WHO TO WATCH ON THE MEN’S SIDE
The South Carolina men will compete in 10 events and will look to perform well early in the field events. Michael Zajac and David Zaycek both perform in the weight throw and shot put for Carolina while Kevin Brinkley will anchor the pole vault at 12 noon. Derek Pressley competes in the triple jump at 4:30 p.m. Jason Richardson returns in the 55-meter hurdles after hitting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark last weekend with a time of 7.84. Freshman Johnny Dutch will also make his debut in the 55-meter hurdles. Aaron Anderson will try to build upon his top five finishes last weekend, participating in the 200m (6 p.m.) and the 400m (4:20 p.m.). Returning All-Americans Quentin Moore and Ray Miley are also in action this weekend in sprints.
NEXT WEEK
The Gamecocks will travel to New York City to participate in the Millrose Games next Saturday, Feb. 2.
