LEXINGTON, Ky.Liza Todd led the tenth-ranked South Carolina women’s team while freshman Michael Zajac set a new PR for the 16th-ranked men’s team in Day One at the Rod McCravy Invitational Friday, consisting of field events at the E.J. Nutter Field House on the campus of the University of Kentucky.

Todd placed sixth in pole vault with a height of 12-1 ½, the best showing by a Gamecock since Todd set a PR at 12-6 during preseason training at Disney World. Sallie Gurganus and Vica Shobe tied for eighth in the pole vault with heights of 11-7 ¾ for the third consecutive week.

Michael Zajac placed sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 62-7 3/4, surpassing his previous personal-best by over one foot. The mark was Carolina’s best performance in the weight throw since February 2006. Jason Cook and David Zaycek also participated on the first day of competition. Cook placed 10th in the weight throw at 55-1 ½ while Zaycek followed at 11th with a distance of 54-9 ½.

Carolina returns to action Saturday with the men’s pole vault scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. The final event of the meet is set for 4:30 p.m.
