CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 Saturday after coming back to defeat Harvard 5-2 in Cambridge, Mass., at the Murr Center Courts. Harvard dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The Gamecocks fell behind early after losing the doubles point. Carolina’s Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori downed Beier Ko and Agnes Sibilski 8-5 at the top position, but the Crimson’s Elizabeth Brook and Laura Peterzan countered with an 8-6 win on court two over Miljana Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic. Stephanie Schnitter and Catriona Stewart beat Megan McGavock and Jelena Rajic 8-6 to put Harvard ahead 1-0 heading to singles play.
South Carolina coasted in singles, registering five wins in six matches with four of the victories coming in straight sets. McGavock dropped just one game in upending Stewart at six singles 6-0, 6-1, and Jocic won easily at the fifth slot versus Brook 6-1, 6-3. Jocic leads the team in singles victories with a 17-4 record in 2007-08.
Zubori improved to 3-0 this spring thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Ko at No. 1 singles, and Schofield topped Peterzan 6-3, 6-3 at the second spot. Vuckovic won her third consecutive match in three sets playing against Schnitter at three singles by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
The Crimson scored its lone point on court four where Sibilski scored a 6-1, 6-1 decision from Rajic to hand the freshman her first loss of the spring.
The Gamecocks return home for their next contest Wednesday to face Furman at 5 p.m. at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.
