BLACKSBURG, Va. – A select group of athletes from the South Carolina men’s and women’s track and field programs competed at the NCAA Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg, Va., Saturday.
Shayla Mahan improved her time in the 60-meter dash by over one-tenth of a second, placing first in the finals in a time of 7.28. Mahan, whose previous season-best was 7.40 set at the New Balance Invitational, came just 0.02 seconds Saturday from posting an automatic qualifying time in the event. Lakya Brookins took second at 7.32 to improve her time on the year. She has hit a provisional qualifying time in all nine races this year between the 55-meter and 60-meter dash.
Krystal Cantey improved her time in the 400-meter dash, running a 54.12 to place second and post her first provisional time of the year. In the 200-meter dash, Gabrielle Glenn and Faraign Giles both hit season-best times but were unable to reach provisional marks after placing third and fourth, respectively.
Jason Richardson won the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 7.75 while Johnny Dutch ran a 7.92 to place fourth.
Johnathan Hancock ran Carolina’s first provisional time in the 60-meter dash this year in a time of 6.74. Hancock placed second after besting his previous season-best of 6.85.
