COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head swimming coach McGee Moody announced the addition of Abby Steketee as an assistant coach to his 2008-09 staff. She will begin her duties immediately. Steketee previously served as a volunteer coach with the Carolina men’s and women’s swimming squad, assisting with pool and dryland workouts and helping coordinate academic services for student-athletes.

Before coming to Carolina, she was a graduate assistant at West Virginia University. Aside from assisting with workouts, she served as academic counselor for student-athletes and assisted with administrative duties, which included newsletter production and travel coordination.

In addition to swimming, she also has volunteered her time in service in the community. While in Morgantown, Steketee was involved with the American Cancer Society as chairman of the Relay for Life Luminaria Community. She also volunteered at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Steketee graduated from Northwestern University Magna Cum Laude with a degree in human development and psychological services in 2003. At Northwestern she participated with the Northwestern University crew team. She was selected as Most Valuable Rower three consecutive years and served as varsity captain. While at Northwestern, Steketee also served with the Northwestern Aquatic Swim Association, serving as head development coach for a 150-member youth swim team.

To stay active, Steketee participates in endurance sports and triathlons including a top 10 finish in her age-group at the 2003 Chicago Triathlon and finishing as the top rookie at the 2006 Eagleman Half-Ironman Triathlon.

She received a masters degree in public health from West Virginia University. She is married to Steve Steketee, who is also an assistant coach on the South Carolina staff.
