COLUMBIA, S.C. — Senior Gira Schofield and freshman Ashley Miller from the South Carolina women’s tennis team will compete in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., over Thursday through Sunday. The event marks the Gamecocks’ final fall event of the year.
The tournament consists of four draws of singles with 16 players in each and two doubles flights with 16 teams in each one. Play begins at 4 p.m. CST Thursday with two rounds of doubles. Matches start at 9 a.m. Friday (two singles matches), Saturday (two doubles matches and one singles match) and Sunday (one singles match).
Both Schofield and Miller enter the tournament having played exceptionally well in their last appearances at the Wildcat Invitational in October. Schofield won the top singles flight in Evanston, Ill., by defeating two ranked players in her four matches. Miller reached the final of her singles flight and teamed with senior Suzanna Mansour to win the flight B doubles title.
Schofield is the highest nationally ranked Gamecock this fall at No. 31 in singles and she is listed at No. 19 in doubles with junior Ana Marija Zubori. Schofield is 4-3 in both singles and doubles matches this year. Miller is second on the team in singles victories with a 7-3 mark and is 5-5 playing doubles.
