ORLANDO, Fla. – Freshman Audrey Broyles tossed her first complete-game shutout in the 5-0 Gamecock win over Bowling Green on Saturday at Hagerty High School Field in South Carolina’s final game of the day in the UCF Early Bird Tournament.

South Carolina (6-1) batted around in its half of the fifth, plating five runs with two outs. The Gamecocks got two on with one out behind walks by sophomores P.J. Fulmer and Jill Semento. Junior Lindsay Walker loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice when pinch runner Sarah Conwell slid into third before the throw from the Falcon shortstop. A strikeout put Bowling Green (2-1) on the brink of escaping without any damage, but freshman Lauren Lackey chopped one down to third that got past the fielder to score Conwell. Senior Ashton Payne drove in two with her single to right. Lackey scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore Laura Mendes followed with an RBI single to bring in Payne. Childs drew a four-pitch walk from reliever Melissa Bott before the Falcons got out of the inning with a force play at third.

Bowling Green tried to mount a comeback bid in the sixth, getting runners at first and second with one out. But Gamecock freshman starter Audrey Broyles got an infield pop up and a grounder to first to end the frame.

Broyles was brilliant, allowing just three hits while striking out 10 in the shutout. Falcon starter Hayley Wiemer got charged with all five earned runs as she gave up three hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. She collected 10 strikeouts.

The Gamecocks wrap up the trip to Orlando on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. against Texas-Arlington at the UCF Softball Stadium.
