ORLANDO, Fla. – The Gamecocks tossed their second consecutive shutout of the UCF Early Bird Tournament, taking a 2-0 win over Texas-Arlington in the final day of action on Sunday at the UCF Softball Stadium.
The Gamecocks (7-1) did all their scoring in the second, plating two runs in the inning. Sophomores P.J. Fulmer and Jill Semento had back-to-back singles, and a walk to freshman Kristen Stubblefield loaded the bases. Texas-Arlington starter Cassandra Nordie threw the first pitch in the dirt, allowing Fulmer to score from third. Junior Adele Voigt packed the sacks again with a walk, prompting the Mavericks to go to the bullpen. Reliever Cara Hulse gave up a fly ball to freshman Lauren Lackey, which was deep enough to let Semento score the second run of the frame. Hulse came back with a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Texas-Arlington threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out against Gamecock starter Kierstyn White. Erica LeFlore and Heather Fortenberry both had singles that brought South Carolina head coach Joyce Compton out to make a pitching change. Freshman Audrey Broyles came in and walked Whitney Simpson before fanning Rebecca Collom to get the second out. Brittany Washington came up next, and she lifted a ball into foul territory behind third base. Shortstop Evan Childs raced over and made the grab to get the Gamecocks out of the jam.
Broyles (4-1) got the win, throwing 3.2 innings in relief, striking out four while allowing two hits and one walk. She has now tossed 15.1 consecutive innings without allowing a run. White allowed three hits and one walk while sitting down one in 3.1 innings. Nordie got the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings of work.
South Carolina returns to the field on Wednesday at Charlotte. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
