CONWAY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina track and field team posted seven wins Saturday to conclude competition on the final day of the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Gamecocks finished the meet with 11 total wins over two days in the outdoor season opener.
The field events were strong for the Gamecock men with wins coming in the pole vault, shot put and discus throw. Junior transfer Elliott Haynie won the pole vault in his Gamecock debut with a clearance of 16-06.75 (5.05m), qualifying to compete at the NCAA regional championships with his mark. Senior David Zaycek earned the win in the shot put at 52-06.75 (16.02m), and sophomore Michael Zajac headlined a 1-2-3 finish in the discus throw with a mark of 164-06 (50.13m).
Senior Johnathan Hancock kept his position in the 100m dash with a win in Saturday’s final at a qualifying time of 10.48 seconds. He also ran the first leg of the men’s 4x100m relay team that won the event at 40.55. Quentin Moore, Obakeng Ngwigwa and Antonio Sales also ran for the Gamecocks in the relay.
Freshman Breehana Jacobs and junior Danielle Barnes registered wins for the Gamecock women. Jacobs took first in the 100m dash final at 11.81. Barnes won the 3,000m run at 9:49.64, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Other top finishes for the women include sophomore Janica Austin taking second in the 100m hurdles (13.96), freshman Stacee Roberts claiming second in the shot put in her Gamecock debut at 44-06.75 (13.58m) and the 4x100m relay team of Lakya Brookins, Jacobs, Kelsey McCorkle and Gabrielle Glenn taking second at 46.35 seconds.
On the men’s side, Ngwigwa took third in the 200m dash at a regional qualifying time of 21.22, sophomore Matt Shuler claimed second in the pole vault at 15-01.00 (4.60m) and junior Aaron Searles took third in the triple jump at 47-07.00 (14.50m). Along with Zajac winning the event, the 1-2-3 finish in the discus throw consisted of Jeff Merkt (161-08 // 49.28m) and Zaycek (148-00 // 45.12m).
South Carolina returns home next weekend when the team hosts the Weems Baskin Invitational Saturday.
