COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina track and field team heads to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend to compete at the prestigious 65th-annual Pepsi Florida Relays this Friday and Saturday at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.

Competing teams include No. 9/4 Tennessee, host No. 8/11 Florida, men’s teams No. 4 Florida State, No. 6 Kentucky, and women’s No. 16 Miami (Fla.). Collegiate events begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday with the women’s 1500m run while field events will open with the women’s high jump at 5 p.m.

The Gamecocks are in search of more NCAA East Region qualifiers after earning 18 wins and 12 qualifiers last Saturday at the Weems Baskin Invitational. The men’s team has earned eight overall qualifiers after two outdoor meets in Johnathan Hancock (100m), Obakeng Ngwigwa (200m), Booker Nunley (110m hurdles), Elliott Haynie (pole vault), Jason Cook (shot put), Michael Zajac (hammer), Erik Heymann (javelin) and the 4x100m relay squad. Nunley is currently ranked fifth nationally at 13.92 and is the only freshman with a sub-14.00 time in the hurdles. Cook ranks fourth nationally with a top toss of 59-11.25 (18.27m).

The women’s team has earned five qualifiers in Janica Austin (100m hurdles), Sallie Gurganus and Liza Todd (pole vault), Brandi Cross (400m) and the 4x100m relay team.

South Carolina returns home to the Weems Baskin Track for the final home meet of the season when it hosts the State USATF meet Wednesday, April 8.
