MISSISSIPPI STATE, Miss. – The South Carolina Gamecocks lost the final game of the three-game series at Mississippi State, 10-2, in six innings on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Softball Field.
The Bulldogs (23-22, 5-15 SEC) scored in the first when Chelsea Bramlett scored from third on Sammie Jo Bailey’s single to right. They made it 2-0 in the third on Brittany Bell’s fielder’s choice, allowing Brittany Gates to cross the plate.
South Carolina (19-19, 5-16 SEC) got a run back in the fourth on sophomore Jill Semento’s RBI double, which plated junior Adele Voigt. She started the inning with a single and moved into scoring position on freshman Kristen Stubblefield’s sacrifice bunt.
But Mississippi State responded with three in the fourth. Jessie Spain drove in two with a one-out single to center. She came around to score on pinch-hitter Laurie Siebert’s single to center, making it 5-1 for the Maroon and White.
The Gamecocks tried to fight back in the fifth, as sophomore Laura Mendes singled home classmate P.J. Fulmer, who got on via a one-out double.
State would wrap things up in the sixth with five runs. Spain scored on Gates’ RBI single, and Bramlett drove in two with her poke through the left side. Bailey brought home Bramlett with her hit, while Ali Bainbridge ended the game with a single that scored Brittany Bell.
The Bulldogs’ Lindsay Dunlap (14-13) got the win, tossing her third complete game of the weekend, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Audrey Broyles (10-9) was charged with the loss, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits in two-plus innings.
South Carolina steps out of conference for the last time on Wednesday, playing at Coastal Carolina. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
