COLUMBIA, S.C. – Jason Richardson from the track and field team has been named Gamecock Athlete of the Week as selected by the South Carolina media relations department.
Richardson tied a Penn Relays record by winning his third title in the 110m hurdles championship at 13.56, becoming only the sixth person to win three individual titles in the event. The feat has never been done by an SEC athlete as he will end his collegiate career with Penn Relays wins as a freshman, junior and senior; he finished as runner-up his sophomore season.
Richardson¹s 13.44 in the prelim is the second fastest time in the NCAA this year and is over three-tenths (.30) seconds faster than the closest SEC competitor. Richardson also ran in two relays, running the final leg of the shuttle hurdle relay team that ran South Carolina¹s second-fastest time in program history at 55.47. Richardson then ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay team that placed fourth in the Championship of America at a season best 3:03.89, the fourth-fastest time in program history. The three races returns Richardson back to championship form as the reigning 110m hurdle NCAA and SEC champion had not competed since backing out of the NCAA Indoors back in March.
