CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Janica Austin had a breakout day as she led South Carolina with two wins as the Gamecocks conclude action at the UNC Elite Meet at Chapel Hill. The Gamecocks posted 16 regional qualifying marks and finished with six wins at the meet.
Janica Austin had a two-victory day with wins in both hurdle events. She came in at under 60 seconds in the 400m hurdles for the first time this year in taking first place at 59.34, the third-fastest time in the SEC this year. Austin then won the 100m hurdles at 13.82.
The 4x100m relay team ran its fastest time of the year for the win at 44.76. Lakya Brookins, Shayla Mahan, Breehana Jacobs and Gabrielle Glenn ran for Carolina to pace the Gamecocks to the victory.
Pole vaulters Sallie Gurganus and Liza Todd both cleared 12-11.50 (3.95m) to take a 1-2 finish in the event with their regional qualifying marks. Gurganus earned the win while the clearance was an outdoor personal best for Todd.
Johnny Dutch and Jason Cook recorded wins for the Gamecock men. Dutch won the 400m hurdles at a season best 49.66 while Cook earned his third win of the season in the shot put with a toss of 61-00.75 (18.61m).
The men split the other seven regional qualifying times between three events with two in the 200m dash, three in the 110m hurdles and two in the pole vault. In the high hurdles, freshman Booker Nunley ran a collegiate best 13.82 to claim second, followed by Jason Richardson in third at the same time and Dutch in fourth at 13.86. In the 200m, Obakeng Ngwigwa claimed third at 20.90 and Antonio Sales placed sixth at 21.21.
In pole vault, junior Elliott Haynie took second at 16-10.75 (5.15m), and freshman Marvin Reitze cleared the same height as well to take third with an outdoor season best.
Brookins and Shayla Mahan recorded the other qualifying times for the women’s team as Brookins took second in the 100m dash at 11.47. In her first run of the outdoor season, Mahan took third in the 200m at 23.86.
The Gamecocks had a couple of second place finishes in the women’s field events with freshman Stacee Roberts taking second in the shot put at 46-04.75 (14.14m) and sophomore Aimee Kodat taking second in the discus throw at 143-04 (43.68m).
South Carolina begins the championship season next weekend when the team travels to Gainesville, Fla., for the SEC Outdoor Championships held at James G. Pressley Stadium. SEC’s will run May 14-17.
