NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team opened its fall season with a strong first-day showing at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday. The Gamecocks finished the day 3-3 in doubles and 5-2 in singles matches.

The day kicked off with two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles in the afternoon. South Carolina’s duo of Rita Maisak and Adriana Pereira posted a couple of wins to reach the finals of the fourth flight. Their opening round match was a 9-7 triumph over Hitimana and Borsanyi of Florida, and they posted an 8-3 victory against LSU’s Burns and Wilson in the semis.

In the No. 2 doubles flight, Josefin Andersson and Dijana Stojic upended Mississippi State’s Ferancova and Terpko in the opening round 8-2. Florida’s team of Mather and Bartlett then defeated the Gamecocks 8-3 in the semifinals.

In the top doubles flight, the Gamecock duo of Ana Marija Zubori and Anna Morgina suffered a pair of losses, first to Revzina and Will of Florida 8-5. In their second match, Zubori and Morgina fell 8-4 to Meier and Lilley from Kentucky.

Maisak and Miljana Jocic posted the first two victories of the day in singles playing indoors. Maisak was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Elizabeth Hall from Mississippi State in flight eight, while Jocic cruised 6-1, 6-1 in her match with Alice Tunaru from Alabama.

Zubori, ranked 29th this fall, snagged the next victory for South Carolina, dispatching No. 49 Karen Nijssen of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-1 in the top singles flight. Stojic moved the Gamecocks’ record to 4-0 after beating Lara van de Stroet, also from Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-4 in flight two. Andersson recorded the final victory for South Carolina in flight five by a score of 6-2, 6-2 versus Natalia Mayuk of Mississippi State.

Carolina’s two losses came in flights four and seven. Morgina dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Jennifer Meredith from Tennessee, and the day ended with Pereira falling in a three-set battle with Tennessee’s Kata Szekely 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Play continues in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic on Saturday with matches beginning at 10 a.m. CT. The day will consist of one doubles and one singles match for the participants.
