University of South Carolina freshman tailback Jarvis Giles was selected as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for his efforts in the Gamecocks’ 38-16 win over Florida Atlantic last Saturday night, it was announced today.
Giles, a 5-11, 183-pounder from Tampa, Fla., led the Gamecocks with 113 yards rushing on 11 carries and a touchdown in the victory over FAU. His long run was a 38-yard burst and his touchdown came on a 12-yard scamper in the third quarter.
It was the first 100-yard rushing game for a Gamecock since Mike Davis opened the 2008 season with 101 yards against NC State and the first 100-year rushing game for a Gamecock freshman since Taylor Rank in 2006.
Giles becomes the second Gamecock to be honored by the SEC this season. Defensive end Devin Taylor was named the Defensive Lineman of the Week for his efforts in week one’s win at NC State.
Giles, Taylor and the rest of the Gamecocks will host Ole Miss on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. in a nationally-televised ESPN game at Williams-Brice Stadium.
