COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team went a perfect 8-0 during its fall exhibition season, sweeping doubleheaders from Spartanburg Methodist, USC Aiken, Erskine and Chattanooga State.
Sophomore Evan Childs had the most potent bat of any Gamecock during the fall, leading the team in batting average and slugging while ranking second in on-base percentage. The Gamecocks showed considerable improvement in getting on base, with seven student-athletes getting on at a .400 clip or better. Junior April Borchardt led the squad in runs batted in, while Childs had four of the nine extra-base hits for Carolina.
In the circle, junior Ashley Chastain picked up four of the eight wins and did not allow an earned run in 22 innings of work. She tied with Kierstyn White with 17 strikeouts in the outings. White went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA. Goodwin got the other win and had a save as well. Borchardt pitched twice and garnered two saves, fanning three in four innings of work.
The Gamecocks kick off the 2010 season at home over Valentine’s Day weekend in a home tournament. More details will be released soon.
