South Carolina

  • Head Coach Steve Spurrier: Falls to 176-65-2 as a collegiate head coach, 34-25 in his fifth year at South Carolina. He is now 11-8 against Tennessee, 2-3 against the Vols as South Carolina’s head coach.
  • Records: South Carolina falls to 6-3, 3-3 in SEC play. Tennessee improves to 4-4, 2-3 in the league. The Gamecocks are now 4-22-2 all-time against Tennessee, 1-14 in Neyland Stadium.
  • First Start: DB DeVonte Holloman made his first career start at safety. He is the 17th different Gamecock to make his initial start during the 2009 season.
  • Milestone for Moe: With his 31-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, WR Moe Brown went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career, becoming the 22nd player in Carolina history to achieve that milestone.
  • QB Stephen Garcia: Had his third 300-yard passing game of the season, going 25-for-50 for exactly 300 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Garcia now has 2,906 passing yards in his career, just 27 shy of 13th all-time at South Carolina (Ron Bass, 2,933 yards from 1973-77). Garcia’s 50 attempts were the seventh-most in a single game in Carolina history; he now has two of the top 10 games in passing attempts in school annals. On the season, Garcia has 2,094 yards, just outside the school’s all-time top 10 in single-season passing yards.
  • Block Party: DE Devin Taylor blocked a Tennessee field goal attempt in the first quarter. It was Taylor’s second blocked kick of the season; he blocked a punt in the season opener at NC State. It was the fourth blocked kick by the Gamecocks this season; Eric Norwood has had two blocks this season (one punt, one field goal).
  • Ending a Streak: South Carolina’s Garcia-to-Brown touchdown in the third quarter ended a stretch of nearly 11 quarters that Tennessee had gone without allowing an offensive touchdown. The streak stretched back to the fourth quarter of the Vols’ game with Auburn on Oct. 3 and spanned the entire contests with Georgia (Oct. 10) and Alabama (Oct. 24).
  • Another Streak Started: PK Spencer Lanning was 2-for-2 on field goal tries on the night, connecting from 47 and 32 yards. He is now 14-for-16 on the season, two short of tying for the fifth-most made in a single season by a Gamecock kicker.
  • Spreading The Ball Around: Eight different receivers caught passes for South Carolina in tonight’s game. Kenny Miles led the way with five catches for 44 yards. Moe Brown and Alshon Jeffery had identical lines of four catches for 54 yards apiece. Also recording receptions were Tori Gurley (4-50), Weslye Saunders (3-39), Jason Barnes (3-33), Justice Cunningham (1-14) and Brian Maddox (1-12).
  • KR Chris Culliver: Extended his own school record to 2,215 kick return yards, remaining in fifth place on the all-time SEC list. He is 48 yards shy of fourth place in league history, currently held by Kentucky’s Derek Abney (2,263).
  • Season Highs, The Bad Kind: The Gamecocks had a season-high four turnovers in the contest. The previous high was two against both Kentucky and Alabama. Three turnovers in the first half led to 21 Tennessee points.
  • Up Next: The Gamecocks play their final road contest of the season on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Arkansas. Kickoff is set for 12:21 p.m. ET at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark., with a broadcast set for the SEC Network.
