BLACKBURG, Va. – Three junior members of the South Carolina track and field teams earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks Friday as the seventh-ranked women and 12th-ranked men completed the first day of action at the season opening Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational.

Juniors Lakya Brookins and Shayla Mahan earned provisional qualifying times in the 60m dash to lead the Gamecocks to a 1-2 finish in the event. On the men’s side, junior Johnny Dutch claimed second in the 60m hurdles for his first provisional qualifying time of the season.

Brookins, the reigning national champion in the event, took first with a time of 7.28 while Mahan came in behind her at 7.37. Brookins came within two-hundredths of a second from earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Dutch earned his qualifying time by taking second in the hurdles with a time of 7.90.

On the women’s team, also competing in the 60m dash was sophomore Breehana Jacobs claimed fourth in the event at 7.50, and freshman Tatianna Fisher placed seventh in the finals at 7.53.

Sophomore Nadonnia Rodrigues placed fifth in the 300m dash at 38.66, followed by Gabrielle Glenn in ninth at 39.03. Freshman Asia Delaney ran a 42.16 to take 30th, and sophomore Radiance Basden ran a 42.47 to finish 33rd.

Other top Gamecock women in action included Dani Barnes, who took seventh in the mile run at 5:02.49, and Janica Austin, who claimed 16th in the 60m hurdles at 8.90. In the field events, freshman Ceci Kryst cleared 36-10.25 (11.23m) in the triple jump to place 18th in her first collegiate meet. Another freshman, Breanna Radford, led the Gamecocks in the weight throw with a toss of 45-02.50 (13.78m) to place 10th.

The men had five top five finishes on the day. In addition to Dutch, freshman Robert Razick claimed fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:24.97, and freshman Lincoln Carr claimed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 49-03.75 (15.03m). Senior Elliott Haynie claimed fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 16-09.25 (5.11m), and classmate Jeff Merkt claimed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 56-11.25 (17.35m).

South Carolina returns to action Saturday with the men’s high jump scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The final event is scheduled to begin at 4:25 as South Carolina concludes competition at the Virginia Tech Invite.
