COLUMBIA, S.C.— Sophomore Lauren Lackey drove in two runs and reached base in all four plate appearances, helping South Carolina outpace Longwood, 5-1, in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Beckham Field.
Lackey went 2-for-2 with her second double of the year, scoring once and driving in two in the contest. Senior Lindsay Walker also had two hits and a run scored for South Carolina (3-0). Juniors Laura Mendes and P.J. Fulmer and sophomore Evan Childs added RBI in the contest. Kami Nuckols recorded one of the three hits for Longwood (0-1), scoring the only run for the Lancers.
The Gamecocks got on the board in the second when Mendes drew a bases-loaded walk. Fulmer followed with an infield single that plated Lackey. Carolina added two more in the third when Lackey drove in freshman Briana Hamilton and Walker with the two-bagger. The final Gamecock run came in the fourth, when Fulmer scored on the Childs RBI single.
Longwood got its only run of the game in the sixth when Courtney Long drew a two-out bases-loaded walk.
Junior Ashley Chastain got her second win of the young season, tossing six innings of three-hit ball, allowing one earned run while fanning four. Junior April Borchardt pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two, in the non-save situation. Briana Wells got the loss for the Lancers, giving up all five runs on eight hits and four walks in four innings.
