BOCA RATON, Fla. – Another outstanding outing by sophomore Audrey Broyles goes for naught as South Carolina (8-6) falls in nine innings to Florida Atlantic, 1-0, in the final game of the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament.

Broyles (3-1) pitched 8.1 innings, giving up one hit for the second-consecutive game, while giving up just one unearned run. She struck out 11 while walking just one in her first loss of the year. Rose Gressley pitched just as well, shutting out the Gamecocks over nine innings, allowing just two hits while fanning nine.

Florida Atlantic (6-7) picked up the win in the ninth on a suicide squeeze. With runners at second and third and one out, FAU’s Blair Bodenmiller laid down a bunt in front of the plate, and pinch runner Kimberly Petrovich sprinted to the plate. Gamecock freshman Briana Hamilton scooped up the ball and dove for home just as Petrovich did the same, and the umpire ruled Petrovich got the plate before Hamilton tagged her, handing the win to the Owls.

Neither team got much going at the plate, combining for three hits and one walk in this pitchers duel. The Gamecocks had their best chance come in the seventh, putting runners at first and second with one out. But Gressley got a line out and a foul pop from the next two Carolina hitters to squelch the rally.

South Carolina continues the road trip on Wednesday when the squad takes on Winthrop, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET in Rock Hill, S.C.
