The University of South Carolina Gamecocks worked out in full pads at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” on Tuesday afternoon on another unseasonably warm spring day in Columbia with temperatures hovering near 90 degrees. It was the squad’s 13th workout of the spring.
“A good hot day, a decent little practice,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the two-hour session.
The Gamecock centers did a little extra work with the quarterbacks after practice. “We’re working with T.J. (Johnson) and (Ryan Broadhead) trying to improve our snaps – shotgun and underneath (center).”
Coach Spurrier remained uncertain as to the format for Saturday’s Garnet & Black Spring Game. “We’ll have a good half and see where we are. We’re down players, like everybody. It’s sort of interesting. All over the country I keep reading about teams that don’t have enough to divide up into teams. We may have 10 offensive linemen healthy now, so we might be able to split up teams.” Coach Spurrier expects “at least four” quarterbacks to play on Saturday.
“It’s been ok,” Coach Spurrier said of his team’s progress as the spring winds down. “A lot of guys have done well, some not as well as we had hoped. It’s been an ok spring.”
The Gamecocks will return to the Bluff Road practice fields on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for their final spring practice prior to Saturday’s annual Garnet & Black Spring Game. That annual event is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium.
