ATHENS, Ga. – No. 12/10 Georgia (40-8, 17-6 SEC) closed out the weekend sweep of South Carolina (11-37, 1-24 SEC) with a 10-2 win in six innings in front of 1,606 spectators on Sunday afternoon at the Georgia Softball Stadium.
Ashley Razey led the Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and six RBI. Kristyn Sandberg also went 3-for-3 for UGA. The Gamecocks got doubles from sophomore Kaitlin Westfall and freshman Hannah Milks and a single from junior April Borchardt.
The Gamecocks captured the first lead for the third straight game, as Borchardt singled with the bases loaded to score Westfall from third. Georgia answered with three in the bottom of the first, as Razey plated two with a single before Alisa Goler crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Bulldog lead grew to 5-1 on Goler’s two-run blast to right center in the second.
South Carolina got a run back in the third when Milks doubled home sophomore Evan Childs after Childs was hit by a pitch with two outs.
Georgia stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fourth on a two-out, two-RBI double by Razey. The lead grew in the fifth on Ashley Pauly’s RBI single. Razey closed out the game with a two-run homer that just cleared the wall over the Georgia logo in right center.
Georgia’s Sarah McCloud (8-1) went the distance, giving up two earned runs on three hits and a walk while fanning one. Gamecock starter Ashley Chastain (4-16) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, while not getting an out.
South Carolina has the next two weeks off before closing out the season on May 8-9 at No. 4 Florida in a three-game series.
