COLUMBIA, S.C. – The NCAA Preliminary Round begins Thursday in Greensboro, N.C. with the University of South Carolina program bringing the eighth-largest contingent to the Eastern preliminary with 37 accepted entries. Competition for the Gamecocks begins Thursday at 11 a.m. when Michael Zajac competes in the hammer throw at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The women’s team qualified 21 entries between 16 athletes, in addition to the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The 10th-ranked men’s team qualified 16 entries between 12 athletes, in addition to both relays as well.

In a change from previous seasons, the country has been split into two regions – East and West – with the top 48 athletes in a region qualifying for the Preliminary Round. The East Preliminary will be held in Greensboro, N.C., and the West Preliminary will be held in Austin, Texas. The top 12 finishers in an event at each regional preliminary will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
