The South Carolina Gamecocks worked out for two hours Sunday night as they continued their preparations for next week’s season opener against Southern Miss. That contest will kick at 7:36 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, with a national television audience watching on ESPN.

“It was a pretty good practice tonight,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. “The quarterbacks, Stephen (Garcia) and Connor (Shaw) were a lot sharper. They got the ball out of their hands. They didn’t have as much hesitation as we usually have around here. That was encouraging. The receivers caught about everything,” continued the Head Ball Coach. “We were encouraged by tonight’s practice. Hopefully we’ll get a little bit better tomorrow and be ready for Thursday night.”

Coach Spurrier still has not declared a starter at quarterback. “We don’t have to decide yet. But we’ve already announced that both are going to play. Again, Stephen had one of his best practices and Connor did some good things. We hope we’re making progress. We believe that we are definitely ahead of where we ended last season, but until we play the game, we won’t know.”

Jarriel King missed Sunday’s practice with “personal issues,” according to Coach Spurrier. He is expected back on Monday. Senior wide receiver Dion Lecorn was back in garnet working out with the squad. He has been hampered much of the fall with a shoulder injury.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Monday at 7 p.m.
