COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina starting pitcher Tyler Webb did not allow an earned run in six innings of work and along with Gamecock relievers Bryan Harper and Matt Price limited Santa Clara to just five hits as the Gamecocks defeated the Broncos 2-1 in game two of a three-game college baseball series at Carolina Stadium. It was the second straight capacity-filled crowd at Carolina Stadium with Saturday afternoon’s attendance 8,242. Carolina and Santa Clara will play the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Gamecock Radio Network including 107.5 FM “The Game.” Live video broadcast is also available at GamecocksOnline.com.
After issuing a leadoff walk in the top of the third inning, Webb retired 12 consecutive batters before giving way to Bryan Harper in the top of the seventh inning. Webb’s line read six innings, one run, unearned on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Harper would hurl 1.2 scoreless innings with Price closing the game out and earning a save with 1.1 hitless innings of work. Santa Clara starter Cory Hall was effective in a loss for the Broncos as he allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.
Santa Clara manufactured a run in the top of the first inning. Matt Ozanne led off with a base hit, advanced to second base on a passed ball and after a sacrifice bunt scored on Curtis Wagner’s RBI ground out.
Hall would keep the Gamecocks off balance until Carolina tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Adrian Morales reached base to lead off the frame with a hit by pitch and after Evan Marzilli’s sacrifice bunt would score on Dante Rosenberg’s RBI single to left field. Both the hit and RBI were firsts for Rosenberg in a Gamecock uniform.
Carolina took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning with Christian Walker singling with one out and advancing to third on perfectly executed hit and run with Brady Thomas. With runners on the corners, Morales lifted a deep sacrifice fly ball to left field scoring Walker and putting the Gamecocks ahead for good.
Seven of nine Gamecock starters had at least one hit with Walker 2-for-4 with a run scored. Zach Looney went 2-for-4 to lead Santa Clara.
