COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman high jumper Jeannelle Scheper has been named the SEC Field Athlete of the Week after winning the high jump in last week’s outdoor season opener, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Scheper earned the victory in her first collegiate outdoor meet in the high jump at a personal best clearance of 1.78m (5-08.75). The mark also matches her indoor personal best and moves Scheper to No. 2 in the Gamecock history books for both the indoor and outdoor high jump in just her first season of collegiate competition. Scheper’s mark pushes the freshman to No. 5 in the NCAA and No. 2 in both the SEC and NCAA East Region at this portion of the season.

She is the third Gamecock to be honored by the SEC this year and the first Gamecock to earn SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors since Precious Akins was selected on February 20, 2007. During the indoor season, Sanura Eley-O’Reilly was named SEC Freshman of the Week once, and Lakya Brookins was named SEC Runner of the Week twice.

South Carolina hosts the Weems Baskin Invitational this weekend with field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
