COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina freshman Julie Sarratt earned her second SEC Freshman of the Week award, the league office released on Monday.
The Gaffney, S.C., product posted a one-hitter against Coastal Carolina to start the week, fanning six and walking one in the shutout. Her relief appearance in game two of the Arkansas series turned into another solid outing despite picking up the loss. Sarratt struck out six in 4.2 innings, giving up the final run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth. But she came back on Sunday and tossed a three-inning save against the Razorbacks, recording the first seven outs consecutively before pitching out of trouble to hand the Gamecocks their second SEC series win of the year.
On the week, Sarratt had an ERA of 0.48, striking out 13 while walking two. She joins Alabama’s Jackie Traina, Georgia’s Morgan Montemayor and Tennessee’s Ellen Renfroe as two-time SEC Freshman of the Week winners this year.
Renfroe claimed the SEC Pitcher of the Week award, while Florida’s Kelsey Bruder took home the SEC Player of the Week certificate.
The Gamecocks host North Carolina State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. before Charlotte comes to town on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
