Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina junior left-handed pitcher Michael Roth was selected in the 31st round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the No. 938 overall pick by the Cleveland Indians. Roth is the eighth current Gamecock to be drafted this year. Jackie Bradley Jr. was selected in the supplemental round by the Boston Red Sox with Matt Price a sixth round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Scott Wingo an 11th round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Peter Mooney was selected in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays with senior right-hander John Taylor selected in the 22nd round by the Seattle Mariners, Adam Matthews in the 23rd round by the Baltimore Orioles and Bryan Harper in the 30th round by the Washington Nationals.

Roth keeps garnering awards as his successful 2011 season continues. Roth, a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes award, was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team last week as announced by Collegiate Baseball. He has also been named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). An international business major, Roth has been successful both on and off the field at Carolina. Last week, Roth improved to 12-3 as he hurled seven innings and allowed just one unearned run as South Carolina defeated Georgia Southern 2-1in the NCAA Regional as Roth earned All-Tournament Team accolades. He also earned All-Tournament Team honors at the SEC Tournament, as he earned his 11th win of the season hurling his the first complete game by a Gamecock this year in the 7-3 win over Auburn. It marked Roth’s second career complete game as well.
