The University of South Carolina has officially reinstated quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus and senior quarterback Stephen Garcia to the football team, it was announced today.
After serving a one-week suspension without pay following an incident last week, Mangus will resume his coaching duties on August 3. As a condition of his reinstatement, Mangus will forfeit compensation equaling one month of his annual salary and will be ineligible for compensation increases or bonuses for a period of one year. Mangus will remain on probation throughout the term of his current employment agreement.
“We insist that those in the athletics department who work with our student-athletes on a daily basis are held to a higher standard of conduct,” said Athletics Director Eric Hyman. “G.A.’s lack of judgment did not reflect the character and integrity that we expect from our coaches.”
Garcia has been participating in voluntary summer workouts with the football team on a probationary basis since the end of May. He has fulfilled the requirements imposed on him by the athletics department, and has been fully reinstated to the squad, effective immediately.
“In the last four months, Stephen has done everything we’ve asked of him,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “He has made a commitment to being a first-class student-athlete and we expect him to continue to be one throughout the rest of his Gamecock career.”
The squad’s first practice is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bluff Road practice fields. The practice is open to the public.
