The University of South Carolina football squad worked out at the Bluff Road practice fields Tuesday afternoon for about two hours.

The big news of the day was that freshman standout defensive end Jadaveon Clowney left practice with a sprained left ankle. Senior defensive end Melvin Ingram also was injured on Tuesday, suffering a left thigh contusion. Both players were able to leave the field under their own power.

“The doc doesn’t think it’s too bad,” head coach Steve Spurrier said of Clowney’s injury. “He went in and put a little ice on it. So two of our d-linemen had a minor nagging little thing. Hopefully, if it had to happen, it happened 10 or 11 days before the game, so they should be ok. They will be out a day or two. Definitely both of them will be out a couple of days. Hopefully they’ll get well by next week.”

The 12th-ranked Gamecocks will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Charlotte against East Carolina.

The Gamecocks are scheduled to practice again on Wednesday afternoon at 4:15 p.m.
