KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The South Carolina women’s golf team posted a 305 (+17) on Saturday and is tied for 20th place after the second round of the SEC/Pac-12 Challenge at Holston Hills Country Club.

The Gamecocks shaved five strokes off their opening-round score and enter Sunday’s final round with a score of 615 (+39).

“It’s not what we are looking for,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “We played much better golf today than the first day. I saw a lot of good things. We just had a couple of holes that hurt us today. It’s a challenging golf course. These greens are tough and they’ve gotten to us a little bit. We’ve gotten better each day. We are going to try to put up a good number (on Sunday) and end the tournament on a good note going into another tournament next week.”

Junior Amanda Strang led the way for the Gamecocks with a 2-over 74. Strang had a strong start to her day, posting a 1-under 35 on the front side, but she recorded a birdie, four bogeys and four pars on the back nine to finish the day at 2-over in a tie for 52nd with a score of 151.

Senior Katie Burnett is also tied for 52nd with a score of 151 after carding a 3-over 75 on Saturday. Burnett bounced back with a 36 (E) on the back nine after recording three bogeys on the front.

Sophomore Samantha Swinehart shot 75 (+3) and is tied for 72nd with a score of 153. Swinehart made the turn at even par but struggled down the stretch with a bogey, a triple bogey, a birdie and six pars on the back side.

Sophomore Katie Rose Higgins was on her way to a solid round as she headed into the final two holes at 3-over. However, a quadruple and a double bogey on the final two holes left her with an 81 (+9). Junior Meredith Swanson also carded an 81 on the day for Carolina.

Sophomore Suzie Lee, who is playing as an individual, shot a 6-over 78.

Alabama shot a 1-over 289 to move atop the leaderboard with a score of 573 (-3). Defending national champion UCLA is in second with a score of 578 (+2), followed by Auburn (582), host Tennessee (583) and Vanderbilt (586). The SEC leads the conference competition with a two-day average of 598.2 compared to the Pac-12’s average of 600.6.

Tennessee’s Nathalie Mansson and Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow are tied for the individual lead with a two-round score of 139 (-5). Mansson fired a 5-under 67 on Saturday, while Meadow posted a 1-under 71.

The Gamecocks are paired with Arkansas, Stanford and Oregon State for Sunday’s final round, which begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Live scoring will be available at golfstatresults.com.
