COLUMBIA, S.C. – A seesaw affair tipped Arkansas’ way in the eighth, as the Razorbacks (17-4, 1-2 SEC) took a 5-4 win in extra innings on Friday night from South Carolina (16-7, 0-1 SEC) at Beckham Field.

Senior centerfielder Lauren Lackey led the Gamecocks with a 2-for-3 day, scoring a run. Seniors Evan Childs and Molly Brossart both added doubles. Devon Wallace, Chloe Oprzedek and Clarisa Navarro all had two hits and a homer for Arkansas, while Andrea Sullivan also homered.

The Razorbacks started the scoring on Wallace’s shot to right to start the third. The Gamecocks answered in the fourth when senior leftfielder Kaitlin Westfall grounded to second, scoring Lackey from third after she singled and got to third on a Razorback error.

Arkansas went back ahead in the fifth 2-1 on Navarro’s two-out homer to dead center. But South Carolina tied it again in the bottom of the frame when junior catcher Shelby Gonzales chopped a ball over the bag at first to score junior pinch runner Hannah Milks from second.

The Gamecocks took their first lead of the contest in the sixth when Westfall drew a one-out walk and scored on Childs’ blistered double down the line in left.

The Razorbacks took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when Oprzedek followed Wallace’s leadoff single with a shot off the light standard in left center. South Carolina would not die though, tying it again on junior shortstop Samie Garcia’s sacrifice fly to right, scoring senior pinch runner Kylie Morin after she replaced Gonzales after a one-out walk. Morin moved to third on Brossart’s double to right.

In extra innings, Sullivan came up with one down and drove the 1-1 pitch out to center, giving Arkansas the 5-4 lead. The Hogs would load the bases in the frame to try to add some insurance, but Navarro grounded one to second to end the threat. The Gamecocks could not get a runner on in the final inning.

Razorback pitcher Chelsea Cohen (10-4) got the win, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. She struck out two and walked one without allowing a hit. Gamecock redshirt junior Audrey Broyles (4-2) took the loss, allowing all five earned runs on nine hits and three walks. She fanned five in eight innings.

Garcia saw her hitting streak end at 21 games, the second-longest documented streak at South Carolina.

The two squads continue the three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Beckham Field.
