Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina senior outfielder Adam Matthews has been selected in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Matthews was the No. 892 overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds. Matthews is the fifth current Gamecock player to be drafted this year. The Baltimore Orioles earlier selected Christian Walker (fourth round) and Matt Price (seventh round) with the Arizona Diamondbacks taking Evan Marzilli (eighth round) and the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim choosing Michael Roth (ninth round).

Matthews serves as captain along with Price and Roth. Matthews was named 2012 Columbia Regional MVP after hitting .385 with a homer, four runs scored and six RBI last weekend. Matthews had three RBI in the 7-0 win over Manhattan, hit a two-run homer in the 5-4 win over Clemson and tallied a RBI single in the 4-3 victory over the Tigers. He is hitting .241 (47-for-195) on the year with five homers and 25 RBI.
