CLEVELAND — South Carolina junior golfer Samantha Swinehart was eliminated by Bethany Wu, 2 and 1, on Wednesday in the opening round of match play at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio.

Swinehart fell behind early and was 3 down through eight holes before making comeback, winning four of the next five holes to go 1 up. However, Wu won the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to claim the match.

Swinehart and the Gamecocks will now turn their focus to the 2012-13 season, which gets underway on Sept. 9 at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. Carolina is coming off one of the best seasons in program history after winning the NCAA East Regional title and finishing fifth at the NCAA Championship.
