DALTON, Ga. — The South Carolina men’s golf team carded a final-round 294 (+6) to wrap up the Carpet Capital Collegiate in a tie for 11th place on Sunday at The Farm Golf Club.

The Gamecocks finished the weekend with a three-round total of 886 (+22). Senior Dykes Harbin and freshman Matt NeSmith both finished in the top 20 to lead Carolina, tying for 14th and 19th place, respectively.

“It was a frustrating week overall, but I was proud of how the guys fought back today,” South Carolina head coach Bill McDonald said. “Dykes had a very solid finish, and Matt getting a top-20 finish in his first collegiate event is fantastic. I saw a lot of things to get excited about this week and I think this team will keep improving.”

Harbin posted the low round of the Gamecocks on Sunday, shooting an even-par 72 to take his three-round total to 216 (E). The top-20 finish is the fifth of his career. A native of Augusta, Ga., Harbin recorded five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars on the day.

One of three newcomers on the South Carolina roster this season, NeSmith made a stellar debut as he closed out the weekend with a 3-over 75. The North Augusta, S.C., native tallied two birdies, five bogeys and 11 pars to finish with a three-round score of 219 (+3).

Sophomore Sean Kelly produced his best round of the tournament, shooting a 1-over 73 as he finished in a tie for 68th with a score of 230 (+14).

Junior Caulder Moore turned in a 3-over 75 on Sunday to tie for 45th with a total of 224 (+8), while sophomore Caleb Sturgeon posted a 2-over 74 to tie for 66th with a total of 229 (+13).

Defending national champion Texas shot a final-round 292 (+4) to hold on to win the tournament with a total of 851 (-13). Georgia finished second with a score of 856 (-8), followed by Alabama (865), LSU (871) and Clemson (871).

Texas’ Brandon Stone claimed medalist honors after shooting an even-par 72. He concluded the tournament with a total of 204 (-12).

The Gamecocks will have the rest of September off from competition before hosting the Rees Jones Invitational on Oct. 1-2 at Haig Point Golf Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
