HANAHAN, S.C. — In just her second round as a Gamecock, freshman Sarah Schmelzel posted an even-par 72 on Monday afternoon to lead the South Carolina women’s golf team in the second round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.

As a team, the Gamecocks shot a 299 (+11) to finish the day in 22nd place. Schmelzel, who has a two-day total of 147 (+3), moved 18 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 42nd.

“In general we made too many mental and simple scoring game mistakes over the past two days,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “We need to adjust tomorrow and we will certainly address these areas in practice in the coming weeks. On a positive note, I have been very pleased with the play and preparation by our freshman, Sarah Schmelzel. Sarah has been very steady for us the past two days and was particularly solid today.”

A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel got off to a strong start with birdies on the third and fourth holes. After a pair of pars, she dropped back to even par with back-to-back bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes as she made the turn with an even-par 36. Schmelzel gained a stroke back with a birdie on the 12th to get back to 1-under, but a bogey on the 16th dropped her back to even, where she finished the day.

Junior Suzie Lee carded her second straight round of 3-over 75 and is in a tie for 65th with a total of 150 (+6). Lee wrapped up her round with three birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and 10 pars.

Senior Meredith Swanson and sophomore Justine Dreher each shot a 4-over 76 on Monday, as they will head into the final round in a tie for 102nd with a score of 155 (+11).

Junior Samantha Swinehart turned in a 5-over 77 and is tied for 93rd with a two-round total of 154 (+10).

Florida moved into the lead after firing a 9-under 279. The Gators hold a three-shot lead with a two-day total of 565 (-11). Southern Cal is in second with a score of 568 (-8), followed by Vanderbilt (574), Virginia (576) and Auburn (576).

Florida’s Camilla Hedberg is in position to claim medalist honors after shooting a 6-under 66. Hedberg is two shots ahead of teammate Isabelle Lendl (137) with a score of 135 (-9).

Round three will begin on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The Gamecocks are paired with Maryland, Furman and Charleston Southern. Live scoring will be available by clicking here.
