ATHENS, Ga. — The South Carolina women’s golf team shaved six strokes off its first round score to shoot a 9-over 297 on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Fall Preview at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

The Gamecocks moved one spot up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th with a two-round score of 602 (+26).

“Overall a much better day for the Gamecocks,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Harris said. “We came back very well after a rocky start very early in the round. We are bunched with several teams and in position for a decent finish tomorrow.”

Freshman Sarah Schmelzel led the way for a second straight day as she fired a career low 1-under 71. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Schmelzel climbed 17 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th with a total of 146 (+2).

Schmelzel got off to a rocky start with a bogey on her first hole of the day, the par-4 10th. However, she bounced back with a birdie on No. 11 and made one more birdie and six pars to make the turn at 1-under. Schmelzel played the back nine at even with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars to wrap up the round with a 71.

Sophomore Justine Dreher overcame a 3-over 40 on the front nine with a 1-under 34 on the back side to get into the clubhouse with a round of 74 (+2). Dreher heads into the final day in a tie for 40th with a total of 151 (+7).

Junior Samantha Swinehart posted a 3-over 75, including a 2-under 35 on the front nine, to move into a tie for 55th with a score of 152 (+8).

Junior Suzie Lee and senior Meredith Swanson carded scores of 77 (+5) and 79 (+7), respectively, for the Gamecocks. Lee is in a tie for 66th with a total of 154 (+10), and Swanson is tied for 70th with a score of 155 (+11).

Auburn remained atop the leaderboard after shooting a 5-over 293 on Saturday. The Tigers hold a four-stroke lead with a total of 580 (+4). Defending national champion Alabama is in second with a total of 585 (+9), followed by North Carolina (586), Southern California (592), Texas A&M (595) and Georgia (595).

Auburn’s Marta Sanz posted a 3-under 69 to take the individual lead. Sanz has a two-shot lead with a score of 140 (-2).

The Gamecocks will tee off in the third round on Sunday beginning at 8:50 a.m. and will be paired with Virginia and Purdue. Live scoring will be available by clicking here.
