The No. 12/11 South Carolina Gamecocks (8-2, 6-2 SEC) worked out Tuesday afternoon at the Bluff Road practice fields on a chilly autumn day in the Palmetto State.
D.J. Swearinger played some cornerback and the nickel back position last Saturday against Arkansas after playing free safety throughout much of the campaign. “It’s a shame that we haven’t been able to play (Swearinger) closer to the ball throughout the year because he’s such an active player,” said secondary coach Grady Brown. “Playing post safety, you just don’t get much action. He’s active. You’ve got to try to put him in position where he can be as active as he was last week. We’ll get together as a defensive staff, especially Coach Ward and myself, and try to put him in a position to help us win.”
Brown was not sure who would make the start on Saturday against Wofford, a triple-option running team. “At the end of the day, the only way you win is to put whoever’s playing the best on the field at the same time. That will be our goal for this weekend.”
Jadeveon Clowney did not practice on Tuesday while resting his sore foot. Quarterback Connor Shaw did practice on Tuesday.
The Gamecocks return to action on Saturday when they host the Wofford Terriers (8-2, 6-2 SoCon) in a 1 p.m. start at Williams-Brice Stadium. The game will be televised on a pay-per-view basis throughout the state of South Carolina with Andy Demetra and Brad Muller describing the action.
