COLUMBIA, S.C. — Junior Michael Flach of the men’s swimming and diving team and junior Juliette Thevenin from the volleyball team have been named Co-AgSouth Athletes of the Week.
Flach helped lead the 21st-ranked Gamecock men’s team to a second-place finish in the Virginia Tech Invitational over the weekend. A native of Annandale, Va., Flach won all three individual events he swam in. He placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a NCAA B cut of 4:18.38, which is the fastest time in the country. He also posted the nation’s fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly to win the event with a NCAA B cut of 1:45.51. He swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle as well by posting a NCAA B cut of 1:35.86, which ranks fourth in the country. In the four relay events he competed in, Flach led his team to one first-place finish (800 freestyle relay) and three second-place showings (200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay).
Thevenin Posted four career bests in a win at Alabama with 27 kills on 73 swings to go with six blocks, four solo. The four solo tied a South Carolina high in five-set matches. In the three set wins against the Crimson Tide, Thévenin posted only two attacking errors, hitting .432 (18-2-37) in those sets. She also tallied her 11th double-double of the year with 16 digs. She followed that with her best career outing against Florida, hitting .343 with 14 kills against the Gators. Thevenin was part of a South Carolina offense that worked around the Gator block, limiting them to only two blocks in the match. Her 10th kill against Florida moved her into 10th in Gamecock history in kills before the end of her third season on campus. She also moved into the top 25 in program annals in digs in the Alabama outing, now 24th with 781 career scoops.
