CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the first outdoor event of South Carolina’s season, eight Gamecocks finished in the top five of their events on Friday at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami.

South Carolina had a strong first outdoor outing in the weight throw, with all four Gamecocks finishing in the top five. Senior Breanna Radford and sophomore Kaysee Sullivan set new personal records in the event. Radford, who was already in the Gamecock hammer throw top 10 at the eighth spot, climbed to the seventh spot with her throw of 174-2 (53.10m), besting her previous PR by nearly four feet (170-3). Sullivan shattered her previous best of 131-11 by over 20 feet with a throw of 154-1 (46.97m).

On the men’s side, redshirt sophomores Andrew Seay and Walker Selby finished 2-3 in the weight throw. Seay recorded a throw of 167-5 (51.04m) while Walker posted a mark of 164-0 (50.00m).

In the women’s 5,000-meter run, a group of seven Gamecocks were led by sophomore Meredith Mill with a time of 17:58.92 to begin the outdoor season. Junior Penny Boswell also finished in the top five, crossing the line in 18:07.69.

Pole vault action was the last event of the day to end. Junior Petra Olsen finished second one week on the heels of her ninth place finish at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. Olsen cleared 13-05 ¼ (4.10m), just off of her outdoor school record at 4.11m. After clearing 11-05 ¾ (3.50m), sophomore Megan Wall finished the day in fourth place.

A full day of competition of field and track events begins tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET.
