CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior Ceci Kryst snagged two of 10 total South Carolina wins on the second and final day of the Hurricane Invitational at the University of Miami as the Gamecocks closed out a strong showing in their first outdoor event of the year.

Kryst posted wins in both the women’s long jump and triple jump on Saturday. She started the day at the long jump and hit a mark of 18-10.50 (5.75m). Shortly after, Kryst recorded a 38-06.75 (11.75m) in the triple jump to complete the horizontal jump sweep.

The Gamecocks started the day off with solid showings in the 4×100-meter relay. The women raced three teams, finishing 1-2 in the event. Sophomore Christal Green, freshman Alexis Murphy, junior Vashti Bandy and freshman Tyler Brockington finished first with a time of 45.81. Just on their heels, with a time of 45.85, was the team of seniors Asia Delaney and Melekia Simpson with freshman Ahtyana Johnson and sophomore Tamera Harris.

In the men’s 4×100-meter relay, the Gamecocks placed two teams in the top five. Freshman Dondre Echols, senior Chris Maxwell, sophomore Chris Walker and freshman Brandon Sanders placed second with a time of 41.17. The team of senior Andre Carter, juniors Chris Royster and Clayton Gravesande and sophomore Eric Winfrey ran 42.07 to place fifth.

Royster picked up the first individual win for the men’s team in the100-meter dash with a time of 10.53. Sophomore Eric Winfrey took third with a time of 10.64. Royster and Winfrey finished 2-3 in the 200-meter dash later in the day, with Royster crossing the line at 21.29 and Winfrey at 21.34.

After competing in the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend, sophomore Erika Rucker and senior Kierre Beckles posted strong starts to their outdoor campaigns. Rucker ran the third-fastest outdoor 800-meter race in school history at 2:07.27 to win the event. Beckles also won her event, recording a 13.14 in the 100-meter hurdles.

After finishing second in the hammer throw yesterday, senior Breanna Radford lead a 1-2 Gamecock finish with sophomore Kaysee Sullivan in the women’s shot put in the first field event of the day. Radford put up a mark of 53-07.00 (16.33m) while Sullivan had a throw of 45-03.75 (11.32m).

Sullivan also competed in the discus and recorded a win with a throw of 145-6 (44.35).

The Gamecocks also finshed 1-2 in the men’s long jump. Fresh off his weekend at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Jarrod Hutchen won with a leap of 25-05.25 (7.75m). Junior Dorian Johnson finished the sweep, setting a new personal best at 23-11.50 (7.30m). Johnson also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 48-02.75 (14.07m)

South Carolina ended the day with a win in the men’s 4×400-meter relay. The team of Maxwell, freshman Jermaine Collier, Walker and Royster recorded the win with a time of 3:13.83. The women’s 4×4 relay team of Green, Johnson, Bandy, and Harris finished second with a time of 3:42.13.

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Echols was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Echols ran 14.28 to finish fourth, behind Gamecock alum Johnny Dutch who won the event with a time of 13.51.

Collier and Sanders finished 2-3 in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. Collier, who finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles earlier in the day, took second with a time of 52.77. Russell clocked in at 53.50 to finish third.

For the women, Brockington placed fourth behind teammate Beckles in the 100-meter hurdles, setting a new personal best at 14.21 and third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.55) as the top Gamecock finisher.

South Carolina placed freshmen athletes in the third spot in both the men’s and women’s 1,500-meter run. Alex Sullivan was the men’s representative with a time of 4:03.44 with Kaleigh Higgins crossing the line at 4:54.23.

In the men’s 800-meter run, two Gamecocks set new PR’s. Sophomores Daniel Novak ran 1:54.78 to finish fifth and Drew Ricci hit 1:55.78 for sixth.

In the men’s discus, sophomore Walker Selby finished fourth with a throw of 138-01 (42.09m).

The Gamecocks will return to Columbia to host the annual Weems Baskin Invitational next Friday and Saturday.
