The University of South Carolina football squad worked out again Thursday afternoon in warm temperatures in Columbia. This was practice number 13 of the allotted 15 spring workouts for the Gamecocks.
After the practice head coach Steve Spurrier showed off the ring that the players will receive for winning 11 games during the 2012 campaign. The players will be presented their rings at the Senior Banquet, which will be held Friday night.
“We’re looking for a big crowd Saturday (for the Garnet & Black Spring Game), said Coach Spurrier. “The weather is supposed to be beautiful. At halftime, we’re going to honor a couple of girls teams,” added the Gamecocks’ coach. Both the women’s basketball and equestrian teams, along with the 2012 Seniors, which arguably had the best season in school history, will be recognized, in addition to the traditional halftime awards.
“We’re going to have (Brendan) Nosovitch and Connor Mitch on the same team,” said the Head Ball Coach of how he plans to break up the squads on Saturday. “Dylan (Thompson), Perry (Orth) and Austin Hails will be on the other team.” The defense will be in the white jerseys and the offense will be in the garnet jerseys. Coach Spurrier is hopeful that the crowd will be between 35-40,000. “It should be a fun day out here,” he added.
The squad will practice again Friday afternoon. The spring drills will conclude on Saturday with the annual Garnet & Black Spring Game. The game begins at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3. Prior to the game, singer/songwriter Patrick Davis will hold a concert in the Farmer’s Market beginning at 11 a.m. The concert and the game are free of charge.
