The South Carolina Gamecocks practiced at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” Thursday night. It was the squad’s seventh workout of the 2013 fall preseason camp.

“Pretty sorry practice tonight, it really was,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. “The offensive guys didn’t look very good. We had trouble snapping the ball to the quarterback. It was pretty sloppy. The pass protection was not very good. But we don’t play for three weeks so we’ve got some time to hopefully get these young guys ready in case they have to play. Nothing to brag about tonight for the offense. The defense ran around and did some good things,” added the Head Ball Coach.

Coach Spurrier indicated that they have not yet started game planning for the opener against North Carolina. “We generally start a couple of weeks before (the game) and go from there. We’re just running plays and trying to block and be in position and try to learn what to do mainly.”

Mike Matulis will have surgery on his shoulder on Friday. “There’s a good chance he could redshirt this year,” said Coach Spurrier. Wide receiver Shamier Jeffery (ankle) returned to practice tonight.

The Gamecocks are slated to practice again on Friday night at 7 p.m. before conducting their first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium. All practices are closed.
