COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina football squad practiced twice on Monday and despite a brief delay in the evening due to thunderstorms were able to get back on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium to finish the evening workout.

“We came into the stadium tonight after a little sprinkle and threw the ball around a little bit,” said South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier. “Walk-on quarterback Perry Orth probably threw it around better than anybody. The receivers caught the ball a little better tonight that was encouraging. The defense did some good things.”

South Carolina wide receivers Damiere Byrd and Bruce Ellington missed practice due to hamstring injuries. Also sidelined was junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with a bruised shoulder.

“Damiere and Bruce tried to run this morning and it wouldn’t surprise me if they are out the first game the way their hamstrings are coming around. We are planning on playing maybe without them. Right now Clowney has a bruised shoulder. If it doesn’t come around real soon we may play without him the first game. Right now, they may not play. We have other guys ready to play.”

A pair of Gamecock players switched positions and numbers. Pharoh Cooper moved over to wide receiver and is now wearing No. 11 with Jamari Smith switching from tailback to cornerback and wearing No. 3 for the Garnet & Black. Also making his first appearance in a uniform was freshman spur Mohamed Camara. He will wear No. 32 for the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields on Tuesday morning. The practice is closed.
