The University of South Carolina football team practiced Wednesday afternoon at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds.” The No. 13/14 Gamecocks (1-1, 0-1 SEC) are preparing for Saturday’s SEC Eastern Division showdown with the Vanderbilt Commodores (1-1, 0-1 SEC). Saturday’s game is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on ESPN with Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe as the announce team.

“It should be a pretty night Saturday night and should be conditions more comfortable for the players anyway than our last two games,” said Gamecock head coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. “Our guys are looking forward to coming home and we’ve got a pretty good record here. I think we have the third winningest home record now (behind Michigan and Georgia).”

Coach Spurrier feels the team has moved on from last Saturday’s setback at Georgia. “That game’s behind us. Hopefully we can learn from it and hopefully we can eliminate a lot of mistakes as players and as coaches and we look like a good ball team Saturday night. We need the fans to come and scream and yell and make it difficult on the opponent. That’s one big reason we’ve won so many at home. I know they’ll be ready to do their part.

“When you get your tails beat you’re in the dumps for a day or two, then you say hey, we’ve got to learn from it and move on. It’s no disgrace losing to a team like Georgia at their place. It’s history. We’ve got to learn from it and move on. Vandy’s a good team. They’re a very good team. I think they’ve won their last three road conference games. They’re coming in here with a lot of confidence,” noted the Head Ball Coach.

Victor Hampton did not practice Wednesday for the second straight day. “I think he’ll suit up,” said Coach Spurrier. “He was out today but should be ready by Saturday I would think. If not, we’ll proceed with Ahmad (Christian), Jimmy Legree and hopefully they’ll play a little bit better, as all the other guys.”

The Gamecocks are scheduled to practice again on Thursday afternoon.
