Three University of South Carolina football players have been honored for their performances in the Gamecocks’ 27-24 double-overtime win at No. 5 Missouri last Saturday.
Senior quarterback Connor Shaw was selected as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week by the league office, the National and SEC Offensive Player of the Week by Athlon Sports, the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week, and is one of eight quarterbacks named by the Manning Award as its “Stars of the Week.” Shaw, a 6-1, 209-pounder from Flowery Branch, Ga., came off the bench in the second half, shrugging off a knee sprain, to lift the Gamecocks to the come-from-behind win. He completed 20-of-29 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, leading Carolina to scores on each of its last five possessions to overcome a 17-0 fourth-quarter deficit. Included was a strike to Bruce Ellington on a fourth-and-goal from the 15 in the first overtime period.
Junior defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles was selected as the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week by the league office, the SEC Defensive Player of the Week by Athlon Sports, and the National Defensive Lineman of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. Quarles, a 6-4, 298-pounder from Hodges, S.C., caused havoc all night in the upset win. He was credited with six tackles, including five solo stops. He had three tackles for loss, accounting for 22 yards, including a pair of quarterback sacks. Quarles ranks second in the SEC in both sacks (7.0) and tackles for loss (10.0) this season.
True freshman placekicker Elliott Fry was selected as the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week by the league office. Fry, a 6-0, 150-pounder from Frisco, Texas, came up big twice late in the game to help the Gamecocks secure the win. He hit from 20-yards out with 5:03 left in regulation to pull Carolina within a touchdown, then converted from 40-yards out in the second overtime for what proved to be the game-winner. For the season, the walk-on is 8-for-10 in field goal attempts.
The No. 14/16 Gamecocks (6-2, 4-2 SEC) will be back in action on Saturday, November 2, when they host the Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-3, 1-2 SEC). Game time is set for 12:21 p.m. ET. Dave Neal and Andre Ware will have the call for SEC TV with Cara Capuano working the sidelines. Approximately 750 tickets remain on sale for the Homecoming game.
