The No. 12/11 South Carolina football team worked out at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” on Tuesday afternoon. The Gamecocks (8-2, 6-2 SEC) are preparing for Saturday’s non-conference matchup with FCS instate rival Coastal Carolina (10-1, 4-1 Big South).

Several Gamecocks were held out of practice on Tuesday including defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (foot), running back Mike Davis (assorted), defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles (headache), safety Brison Williams (forearm), linebacker Cedrick Cooper (groin), and fullback Jordan Diaz (knee sprain).

The Gamecocks will face one of the FCS’s most prolific offenses in Coastal Carolina. “From the standpoint of the secondary, it really doesn’t matter that they are I-AA,” said defensive backs coach Grady Brown. “I’m actually a I-AA product and coached a lot of football on the I-AA level. With skill guys, if you’re good, you’re good. That doesn’t change very much. So it will be a good challenge for us this weekend. (Wide receivers Matt) Hazel and (DeMario) Bennett are good players. Hazel has good length. He’s a guy who can make tough catches. He’s done a good job. He’s put together a good career while he’s been there. Most of my older guys know more about (Bennett) than I do from a personal note,” Brown said of the former Gamecock. “He’s been doing a good job for them as well.”

Kelcy Quarles expects to be back at practice on Wednesday after. “I’ve got a bad habit of hitting people with my helmet and leading with my head,” said Quarles as to why he’s experiencing the headaches.

Saturday’s game at a sold out Williams-Brice Stadium (80,250) is scheduled for 1 p.m. start. It will mark the sixth sellout in as many home games for Carolina this season and the season finale against Clemson is also a sell out. The game will be available on a pay-per-view basis with the Gamecock radio team of Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs providing the call.
