George Rogers to be Inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame

University of South Carolina football legend George Rogers is one of six individuals who will be inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, February 7, at the Buckhead Theatre, located at 3110 Roswell Road NE in Atlanta. A reception, buffet, silent auction and raffle will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the induction ceremony slated for 7:15 p.m.

Rogers, a Duluth High School graduate won the 1980 Heisman Trophy as a Gamecock running back. The first selection in the 1981 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints, Rogers was a member of the 1988 Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins.

Joining Rogers in the 2014 class are Cindy Brogdon, who led Greater Atlanta Christian to three state high school basketball championships; Corky Kell, a longtime Cobb County high school football coach and athletics director; Antonio McKay, a three-time All-America track & field athlete who captured two Olympic gold medals; John Smoltz, who played two decades and was an eight-time All-Star with the Atlanta Braves; and Ted Turner, the former owner of the Braves and the Atlanta Hawks.

The Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame is dedicated to honoring Atlanta’s sports heroes, remembering great moments in Atlanta’s sports history and preserving the past from which future generations can learn and take pride.
