For the second time in as many practices, the South Carolina football team was forced to move its spring practice indoors due to the inclement weather in the Columbia area.
“It was just a little too cold to go outside today so we used our indoor facility and our guys got some good work done,” said head coach Steve Spurrier. “I think (wide receiver) Jody Fuller had his best practice ever as a Gamecock – caught a bunch of passes and blocked a little bit. (Quarterbacks) Dylan (Thompson) and Connor Mitch threw the ball around better today. The defense was active.”
Wide receiver Kane Whitehurst sprained his foot during practice, according to Coach Spurrier. The Head Ball Coach also noted that Mike Matulis has been playing some at right guard, the position vacated by Ronald Patrick.
Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward has been impressed in the first two practices by junior college defensive tackle Abu Lamin. “He’s real strong, real powerful,” said Ward. “He’s got a great punch. He’s just got to learn what we’re doing, but he has a lot of promise.”
The Gamecocks are slated to return to the Bluff Road practice fields later this week, with workouts scheduled for both Thursday and Friday afternoon at 4:15 p.m. In addition, the Gamecocks will practice on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Williams-Brice Stadium. Those practices are open to the public.
“Hopefully we’ll get outdoors Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” continued the Head Ball Coach.
